Triund - In the Lap of Dhauladhar Range

Triund - In the Lap of Dhauladhar Range

Hi,

So if you all are following our Instagram page you must be knowing that last weekend we were at Dharamshala. The reason to select Dharamshala for a long weekend holiday was only one... we wanted to do our first Himalayan trek. There are five main treks from Dharamshala and the easiest of all is Triund. And that's the reason it is most widely done.

And here we are after doing almost 13 km of trekking and coming back home and typing this on Saturday night,  a week after my trek but still smiling wide from ear to ear...The snow-capped mountains do that to you. They are like the best intoxicants in the world. You don't want to go ahead. You don't want to get down. All you will get is peace and solemn.

Did we find it? - Oh yes!

Are we missing it? Definitely!

And are we going again? Already planned!

Now regarding the trek. It is the most famous trek and you will get many touring companies and guide in McLeod Ganj. On Instagram also there are many pages you can follow and ask them if you want to plan ahead. The trail is well marked for DIY trekkers. There are three routes to Triund.

- Galludevi (official and more scenic)

- Bhagsu Naag temple (most widely used)

- Bangotu

We really don't know about Bangotu route but our guide was telling us that it has narrow trails. We started our trek from Dharamkot road. We walked around half a km to reach Heena Cafe where our guide met us. He is a young man with great enthusiasm and tremendous love for mountains.  We could not have finished this trek without him. There were other guides around but the care and concern he showed for us as well as kids were admirable. We had already planned our trek before coming to Dharamhsala but according to them, the Galludevi route was closed due to snow. So the trek was going to be from Bhagsu Naag only. But thanks to the reception guy at Karma Exotica, who insisted we do it from the Gallu Devi route as it is more picturesque and with different views at every turn, we contacted Mr. Gaurav from Himachal Hills Adventure and we found our guide Mr. Deep Bhardwaj.

The initial trail from Heena cafe to Triund check post is a little steep and will test your stamina for the trail ahead. But once you cross the checkpoint you will enter another world with a beautiful valley on your side and red rhododendron flowers welcoming you, motivating you to go further and further. Do taste them and eat them along the trail. They are true energy boosters.

Halfway along the trail, you will get a small cafe (Magic View Cafe) where you can refill your water and have mountain wali Maggie. But don't forget to have a cup of coffee there. It was pure bliss!!

And a little ahead of the trail we got our first snow. The kids were completely flabbergasted. Shaurya didn't want to go ahead. But once he came to know that there will be much more snow on the top his speed had no bound. From there it was like we were different individuals. We passed the last 22 sharp u-turns and steep climbs easily all thanks to kids' excitement and eagerness. At places, the trail was slippery with few people turning back but our kiddos were true motivators for us.

And once we reach the summit, the feeling is ineffable. On one side there was a pleasing Kangra valley and on the other side, there were snow-covered stupifying Dhauladhar mountains. It envelops many emotions.  And that's why I am not going to write about it here. There is a small cafe at the top that provides Maggie, Dal Rice, and Omelette.

After spending an hour or two at the top we started to descend as our base camp was 1.5 km down. We were meeting many people on the way coming up from Bhagsu Route.

The campsite is well managed. They provide you tents and sleeping bags and arrange all for you. They also provide scrumptious dinner and basic breakfast. You can also do a bonfire at night. we missed the sunset view because of clouds but it must be amazing. But don't forget to get up early to view the breathtaking sunrise. The rising sun was playing peekaboo with us due to clouds but nevertheless, it was terrific.

The descent is quite easy with rocky steps and well-marked trails. You will get a few cafes along the trail and one campsite at Mana.

Bhagsu Nag waterfall is overcrowded and after the peaceful atmosphere of Triund Top and the trail, you might not want to spend time here.

So this was a summary of our experience. we will not lie. It was tiring for us... and as I am the least fit among the four of us I am still getting leg cramps. Did we sleep well in the tent? The answer is No... but kids did.

But was it worth it? then the answer is YES... YES...YES...

Triund trek - Distance - depends on where you start but overall from Galludevi it is a 6.5 km climb.

Difficulty level - Easy. Can be tricky and slippery at places due to snow.

The altitude of Triund - 9278 ft

Points to consider:

1) You will get hot food along the trail and at the top so don't take many things with you. But do take adequate water bottles.

2) We also need proper trekking or sports shoes for a good grip as few trails have snow and on the Bhagsu route the path is rocky and sometimes slippery.

3) Take trekking poles with you. they are invaluable.

4) Take warm inners as well as jackets even if you are going in spring or autumn as it gets really chilly at night.

5) this can be done as a day trek also and without a guide.

6) There is one forest guesthouse at the top that can be booked online. However, I was not able to do it.

7) Triund is also the mid-point to many amazing treks like - the Snowline trek, Lahesh cave, Laka Glaciar trek, and Indrahar pass.

8) Cost of camping- 900-1100 rs/person

Champaner - Jami Masjid and Shaher ki Masjid : Some places are worth visiting again and again...

Champaner - Jami Masjid and Shaher ki Masjid : Some places are worth visiting again and again...

Hi,

So I always thought that our blog is about places near Vadodara and why have I not posted about Champaner yet? It is one of the most iconic historical places near Vadodara and still we have not shared about it? The thing is whenever I started writing about these extraordinary archeological sites I thought about Konkona's article in Wake up Sid. What shall I write? So many posts, blogs, vlogs about these sites... What am I going to say which is new,  which is unique... But then I realized when the place is like Champaner, you don't need to be unique or different...Because the place itself is exquisite...

As situated so close to Vadodara in the lap of Pawagadh, Champaner is not an unknown place for Barodians and yet both Champaner and Pawagadh are the most common tourist attractions for us. There are so many monuments in Champaner village including seven mosques. Among these, the Jami Masjid is the biggest,  most elaborate, and most famous one. We still have not visited all of them but we are definitely going to visit all and surely update here.

Jami Masjid and Shaher ki Masjid are nearby only and just opposite the entry point of mighty Pawagadh hill.  And oh!  How they stood tall and proud in front of it. Jami masjid has a central courtyard with corridors all around with amazing pillars which have bewitching stone carvings. There are a total of 172 pillars with two altitudinous minarets touching the sky just like the colossal Pawagadh behind them.

Once we went there in spring and what a wonderful sight was it!!! The flowers of bougainvillea were fallen on the ground just like Nani's pink quilt, tempting us to lie down and
forget all our worries.

All these monuments are just like wrinkles. The more we look at them, the more we fell in love with them. Because we can understand stories, struggles, and hard work behind them.  Dedication of each and everyone is peeping out from each cranny and nook and not to forget the dream which had made all possible... Now you all must be thinking who in the state of the sane mind will fall in love with wrinkles and see them in a positive way... You bat, I did!!! Just read it yourself.

Wrinkles

This morning

while looking in the mirror

I realized

Wrinkles on my forehead

Crow's feet around the eyes

I got a little worried

What am I? 40?

Then mirror smirked

And answered

To me and to everyone like me :

Wear them with proud

These are the hallmark of

Unlimited worries about kids

Are they getting a balanced diet?

Are they adjusting to a new city?

Their moods, their studies

Their happiness, their sorrows

From diaper rash to job lay-offs

Wear them with proud

Because they showcase

Your care about parents

About their health

About their loneliness

Those hospital visits to

Frequent  goodbyes

Those endless phone calls

'Have you had your lunch' talks?

Wear them with proud

They exhibit your concerns

For your partner

His career apex to

Her continuous progress

Fulfilling his little needs

Without asking to

Showering with affection

In all her attainments

They say u worry too much

Rather unnecessarily

I say these are the reasons

I get up in the morning

These are reasons

For our existence

We thrive on these worries

Wrinkles of grandparents’ hands

When they gently pat on your cheeks

Wrinkles on the clothes

After all days of hard work

Wrinkles of the paper planes

And origami paper boats

Wrinkles of the old tree bark

Wrinkles of the dried flower petals

Wrinkles on pat cats and dogs

Rusty wrinkles on giant rocks

Of the dry land, of sand dunes

Wrinkles in the mud after the rain

Of the lava in pahoehoe (*)

So I thanked the mirror

For showing me

Forehead, frown, bunny lines

Mental crease and tear troughs

Whatever they are called

And that's how

My foundation and primer

Went back into the drawer

And

I wear my wrinkles daily with proud

Who needs all makeup

When we are gifted with

Signs of

Our affection

Our care

Our love

Our heart

                             - Kaajal.

(*) - pahoehoe - basaltic lava with smooth, undulating, ropy surface

We still have not visited Kevada mosque, Nagina masjid, Lila Gumbaz ki Masjid and Kamani Masjid. We are going to visit them soon and will definitely post about them here.

That's all.

See you all next week.

Mangadh Hill : Jalianwala Bagh of Gujarat

Mangadh Hill: Lesser-known story of Independence

Hello all,
This was our trip on the day of Vasi- Uttarayan. we wanted to go out from the hustle-bustle of Uttarayan in the city. So off we went to Mangadh Hill. There are so many untold stories of our independence and Mangadh is one of them. Thanks to the government for developing such places for tourism so we value our independence, which is much needed in this time where everyone is just following blindly to one or the other.

Mangadh Hill is located at the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan.  It is also known as the Jalianwala massacre of Gujarat. Around 100 years ago on 17th November 1913, Britishers massacred 1200 Bhil tribal people on this hill. The local guru named Govind Guru (Govind Giri)  had launched a movement against Britishers among the tribal Bhils. The movement was called the "Bhagat Movement". his main aims were to promote awareness of basic Hindu rituals like vegetarianism and avoiding alcohol. He also educated them about their rights and the fight against bonded labor. aware about and during one of such gatherings in Mangadh, on 17th November, it is believed that around 1.5 lakh Bhils were gathered on the hill and surrounding jungle. But the local state and Rajwara believed that it is the movement against them and they informed the Britishers who bombarded people with machine guns and bullets. It is said that all nearby wells were flooded with dead bodies. It was one of the cruelest massacres done by Britishers in India.

The story has been told with beautiful murals on the hill and it is one of the must-visit places in Gujarat.

There is also one museum of the things made by tribal people, but we were little late so we couldn't visit that. Few gazebos are also here so you can definitely have a good picnic here and enjoy your holiday with friends and family.

I wonder there must be so many untold stories of our independence. BIt then the question always comes to my mind are we as independent as we should be?

Independence

Let’s be independent

Independent from the images

Independent of to be YOU

A girl, A woman

Or

A boy, A man

Independent of gender

No shame

No pressure

Let’s be independent

Independent to express ourselves

Young people

Independent to leave the house

Parents

To enjoy their life

Independent of ‘grown-ups’

No shame

No pressure

Let’s be independent

Independent of our choices

Independence

To work till late hours in the office

To manage home beautifully

To roam in mountains

To wander in the jungle

Independent of stereotypes

No shame

No pressure

Let’s be independent

Independent mothers and daughters

Who is seeing, listening

Understanding, tolerating

All the nonsense behaviors

Let her express herself

No shame

No pressure

Let’s be independent

Independent child

Doing chores

Causing chaos

Those walls with scribbling

Those torn cushion corners

Let them argue

With you

And with themselves

No shame

No pressure

Let’s keep nature independent

The way it’s always meant to be

Let’s not ruin her

By our greed

By our materialism

By our stupidity

Let’s make a nation of

Independent adults

Independent kids

Independent mind

Independent heart

Not listening to false promises

Not believing in fake concepts

Not following the wrong ideology

Let’s be independent

Observing silently

Assessing carefully

Processing independently

Independence has many faces

Independence has many milestones

The peak is not there yet

But let the journey continue...
